An important note on market conditions for our valued customers:
There are currently two major events unfolding that will impact the availability and pricing on many of your favorite produce items in the next few weeks.
First, the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene will be affecting crops from the southeastern states for the foreseeable future. Many fields were wiped out entirely from the storm and as those communities recover, you will see an impact on available items like peppers, beans, corn and cucumbers. These items will likely be scarce and more expensive than typical. Our hearts go out to all those growers and businesses impacted by the storm.
Additionally, a major strike of the dockworkers and longshoremen unions will have a ripple effect on market conditions from Texas to the East Coast. Their strike began on Monday night and until it is resolved shipping containers coming from international growing areas will not be unloaded and transported further into the market. Items such as blueberries, asparagus, sweet onions, citrus and potentially tropical fruits such as pineapples and bananas will likely be affected. As with the hurricane, these unfolding events will impact both availability and pricing on items coming in.
What about the local stuff? Well, you will still see some local produce rolling in but bear in mind we are due for our first frost soon so these crops are almost done for the season.
As we do every day we will continue to wake up before dawn to head into the New England Produce center to get you the best possible product available at the sharpest prices we can find. Because we shop the markets daily, we will have our ear to the ground as these situations develop and we will continue to work hard to bring you the best possible produce we can find as the market conditions evolve.
